Concussions

Please answer the questions in a blog post.  Please make sure you write your answers in complete sentences and use supporting details from the articles and videos.

1. What is a concussion? What are symptoms of a concussion?  Watch this video clip of Dr. Sanjay Gupta from:  http://sanjayguptamd.blogs.cnn.com/2012/01/24/explain-it-to-me-concussions/

2.  What is second impact syndrome? Watch the following video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du_qiQ96ddk

3. What do you think about concussions and sports?  Is this a big deal or being blown out of proportion?  Are the sports league trying to keep the stats a secret?  Are concussions just part of the game?  Should we be trying to find a way to minimize them? What about tackle football at grades 3-6?  Are parents part of the problem? Are athletes that want to keep playing part of the problem?

  1. Second impact syndrome is when a second concussion occurs before the first one heals.

I think we should take regards to concussions because its very common within sports. Such as football, there is head to head contact every single play. I don't think their trying to keep it a secret because it is something you should take seriously and handle it properly. I think grades 3-6 should not play tackle because their brains are still in the stage of development. I do not think parents are part of the problem because they cant control what happens on the field. I think if any athletes get any symptoms minor or major should sit out and later get testes. Playing could make it worse and cause more issues and healing in the long run.

  2. 2. Second Impact syndrome is a fatal brain injury that occurs when you get a second concussion before the first one ends up healing.
    3. Concussions are a serious problem in sports and many people don't think its a big deal. Most sports I think try and keep the stats a secret because most players retire and then talk about how they had concussions and many teams don't give the right injury status. As of right now, the NFL and NCAA are trying to minimize these injuries by adding penalties on helmet to helmet contact. I think in lower grades that its not as big of a problem because smaller kids don't have the power of older kids to cause a severe hit. Parents are not the problem because they care about their kid and wanna keep them safe. I think its some athletes faults that wanna keep playing because they're putting themselves in more danger then what they are in now.

  3. Second impact syndrome is when someones brain swells rapidly after they suffer from a second concussion before symptoms from the first one has fully healed.

I think concussions and sports should be taken very seriously. I do not think it is being blown out of proportion, and should actually be taken more seriously. Concussions are a part and risk of "the game" but should be avoided and prevented at all costs. I think we should continue to find ways to minimize concussions, but also think that there are many preventative measures that many people ignore and push to the side.

Parents can be part of the problem if they push their child past their breaking point, but it is ultimately up to the player to take care of themselves. If they choose to ignore and hide the symptoms, there is nothing that anyone can do for them.

As for tackle football for children as young as third grade- I think it should be completely banned. There is no reason these children to be playing such a physical, contact sport with their brains not even being close to fully developed.

  4. Second impact syndrome is when a second concussion occurs before the first one heals. I think concussions are definitely a big deal. Concussions maybe "just a part of the game" but that doesn't mean they're not a big deal. Sports, especially football, are making the rules more strict to prevent concussions. I understand that it might make people mad but the safety and future of athletes is much more important than a game. Parent are for sure a part of the problem. Parents will often overlook their kids when they say something hurts just because the parents want them to play. It's not fair for kids to have their arms thrown out before they get into high school for baseball. It's not fair for kids to play on injuries just because they have to or want to make their parents proud. Athletes that want to keep playing are a part of the problem but not as big a part. Coaches should take responsibility and refuse to play their hurt players. It's in their best interest.

  5. Second impact syndrome is when a second concussion occurs before the first one has healed. It can be fatal and severely damage their brain.
I think concussions in sports are something we should take very seriously. I think concussions are a very big deal because we need to make sure athletes stay healthy. I think the sports leagues are trying to keep the stats a secret to make the sport appear as not being that dangerous. I think concussions are apart of the game but athletes should be warned about how to prevent them at all costs. We should be trying to come up with more ways to reduce the amount of concussions. I do not think tackle football is a good idea at grades 3-6 because the child's brain is still developing and their brains would be more susceptible to a concussion than a groan man would. I think in some cases parents are the problem because many parents only believe in physical injuries that they can see and not mental issues that they cannot see. I also think athletes that want to keep playing is a part of the problem because they need to know when they are hurt in order to prevent their concussion from worsening.

  6. 2. Second impacted is occurs when the brain swells rapidly, and catastrophically, after a person suffers a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided.
    3. I think concussion and sports go hand and hand, playing sports is not as import as you health. This is a big deal..as i ride horses i have hear and see lots of concussions, its scary to see the short and long term effect concussion have on someones health and over all well-being. I do believe pro sports try there best to high the effects of the damage concussion have on some of there players. With kids being so young 3-6 grade, and there brain being in the process of growing..high impacted sports could effect the growth of the brain. I believe that parents should be more educated on this topic to know what to look for. Yes, athletes need to know when there bodies tell them to stop.

  7. I think concussions in sports are a big deal. Kids like Conrad are being paralyzed everyday because of certain sports and the way we play them. Yes, I do think the sports league are trying to keep it a secret to try and save the sport and to keep making money. Concussions are apart of the game, but now they are a bigger part, we need to find a way to minimize or no one will want to play so they don't risk getting injured. Grades 3-6 should have a limit on how much they can hit during a week, extra padding, and a doctor on sight to evaluate every kid before and after a game. I don't think parents are the problem unless they are pushing their kids to keep playing. Kids (like myself) want to keep playing and don't tell a coach if they're injured unless it is very serious. We need to learn to tell a coach if we aren't feeling right and that it is okay not to play and sit out a game or two instead of risking our life.

  8. 2. Second impact syndrome is when you get a concussion on top of a concussion before the first one has healed.
    3. I think concussions are a huge deal but unfortunately they are a part of sports. I think we should do everything we can to minimize them. I think 6th grade is a good time to start tackle football anything under that is pretty young. Some parents are very hard on there kids and push them to much. Athletes can sometimes have to much pride and stay out even when its not needed we need to keep people posted on how you feel.

  9. Second impact syndrome is when you have a concussion, and then get another concussion before the first is healed. I think concussions in sports is the most injury players have and the worst injury out of all them because some players can never recover from an injury like Conradt. Concussion are a part of the game and now an even bigger part because we are starting to find ways to minimize them and help treat them as soon as the concussion happens. We should definitely try to minimize them because a concussion can impact your life forever. I think some parents are part of the problem since they will just brush the injury because they want their child to play or think they're child is overreacting, but I think players are the biggest problem because they never want to report that they are hurt, resulting in an even bigger problem than a concussion.

  10. second impact syndrome is when you receive a concussion before the first concussion has fully healed and the player is showing no symptoms. I believe concussions are not being prioritized as much as they need to be in sports, they are not a natural part of the game and should be dealt with by a certified doctor. I also believe that the sports leagues are not trying to keep the stats secret but the players themselves are not fully aware of not telling your coach the symptoms. However I feel like we could minimize them with better helmets and more responsible adults and coaches.

  11. 2.Second impact syndrome is when a second concussion occurs before the first one can heal.

3.I think they are very scary and people need to take it more seriously. This is a very big deal. I think the NFL is trying to keep this a secret especially CTE because they know business will go down because people won't play becaue of this. If you play football or any other contact sports you know that's a risk you're playing with, and yes we should try to minimize it, but nothing will cmpletley stop concussion unless you stop playing the sport. Tackle football is a bad choice at that young of an age but I think it is signafaclty safer that high school football. The reason people dont come out is because they dont wanna look like a wimp, but it depends on what kind of parents you have.

    3. I think that concussins during sports are a very big deal. However, I don't thinkg sports leagues are trying to keep the stats a secret, I think they are trying to say play at your own risk because then people know what the consequences are. We should be trying to minimize the concussions that occur in sports because they shouldn't be "just part of the game", for most people playing a sport is more to have fun, stay active, and be on a team, so they shouldn't have to have added side effects to playing. Tackle football for younger kids is not a problem as long as the correct precautions are taking place. For example, proper protection, a trainer, etc. Lastly, I don't think that either the parents or athletes that wanna keep playing are a part of the problem because I think that they could be not as informed as the should be.

  13. Second impact syndrome is when Somebody already has a concussion, the goes out and gets hit again, resulting in serious injury. I think concussions are a big deal in sports and should be treated as such. I'm not sure if leagues are trying to cover up the stats but I know they do not pay enough attention to them. Concussions should be minimized and eventually be as small as possible. Parents are obviously part of the problem as shown by the video. Athletes need to be more educated on the risks of concussions.

  14. 2.) Second impact syndrome is when a second conclusion occurs/happens before the fist concussion is healed. Second impact syndrome can be fatal.
3.) I think that with sports like football, the player should expect a concussion. That is just the nature of sports. It is a big deal especially when players or athletes ignore it and do not tell their coaches. It is so dangerous and eventually could be fatal and I think that it should be brought up more. Athletes should be educated on concussions because they are serious brain injuries. Sports leagues probably are trying to keep it a secret just because they want their atheltes to get back out there and win. I think that no matter the injury, people should always try and research and learn on how that particular injury can be prevented. PARENTS ARE THE WORST. Always wanting to start their kids young. It is not safe for 3-6 graders to be playing tackle football at that young of an age. If it will ruin a teenage brain it will definitely effect a younger child. Parents and athletes both play a role in whether the athlete should be playing or put back into the game. The athlete will say they want to keep playing and not tell anyone about it while the father of a parent might say, "Suck it up. You're fine".

  15. second impact syndrome is where you have a concussion and you still play with it then you get another concussion on top of the other one.
I think that concussions should be taken very serious.I think that it is being blown out of proportion because not everyone cares that much about concussions and how dangerous they can be.They are a risk you that you have to take when you play a sport.every sport there is a chance of a concussion.
The child's parents could be a very big problem. they could be pressuring there child to go through it and play. they need to take into consideration of there child's mental health.
I think that tackle football for little kids should be just flag because if you get a concussion at a young age it could hurt you down the road.
