Concussions

Please answer question 4 in a blog post. (1 -3 we did in class) Please make sure you write your answers in complete sentences and use supporting details from the articles and videos.

1. What is a concussion? What are symptoms of a concussion?  Watch this video clip of Dr. Sanjay Gupta from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyRBlSAfb_k

2.  What is second impact syndrome? Watch the following video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du_qiQ96ddk

4. What do you think about concussions and sports?  Is this a big deal or being blown out of proportion?  Are the sports league trying to keep the stats a secret?  Are concussions just part of the game?  Should we be trying to find a way to minimize them? What about tackle football at grades 3-6?  Are parents part of the problem? Are athletes that want to keep playing part of the problem?

  1. I think concussions are a big deal. Yes leagues are trying to keep the stats a secret, they're not just part of the game they should be finding a way to reduce the amount of concussions. I think tackle football is to young for grades 3-6. I don't think parents are the problem but athletes that what to just keep playing are the problem because they know they have one but don't want to get help because they want to keep playing.

  2. Concussions are a bg deal, becasue yourm ost important body part by far is your brain. Also im sure that many coaches are careing or telling ther kids that much abut ocncussions in fear that the kids will not play a game if they beleive they have a concusiion..Concussions are just a part of the game nut they should be taken care of .Yes, we hsould be trying to minmize them.We shoundt have tackle football at grades 3-6.Parents are a partof the problem.Athleates that want to continue ae also a part of the problem.

  3. I think concussions in sports are very scary and we should try to avoid them, specifically in teenage brains. Is this a big deal or being blown out of proportion? I believe it is a big deal because it can have some major effect effects such as second impact syndrome and CTE. Yes, sports leagues are trying to hid the fact that their players are injured because they want them to play and or the player wants to play still too. Concussions are not a part of the game, but hitting is. So players should do there best to avoid blows to the head.Yes we should be finding more ways to prevent them. Tackle football shouldn't be allowed for that young of kids.Parents, coaches, and players are all part of a problem when they dismiss a concussion.

  4. I think that concussion are something that happens because players dont know the complete right way to block hit, or its just the body going into a fight or flight type of ordeal. i think it is a big deal.i feel like they are. They are for no but they shouldnt be.yes by far we should be. Tackle food ball that young is to young it should wait till maybe 7th or 8th. Yes because parents push there kids sometimes.I Dont really kniw they kinda are but there kinda not.-Terry

  5. I think it's good to have a lot of attention on concussions so no one suffers brain damage from having 2nd impact syndrome. The NFL is probably trying to get rid of the research so they don't lose players to concussions, parents have a role in it too seeing that a lot of parents probably want their kid to be the star of the game and if they get a concussion they can't play. Also they should find ways to minimize the problem like making sure a player doesn't go back on the field and make it worse.-Makayla Wells

  6. I think that concussions are a big deal when it comes to sports. I also think that we should be trying to find a way to minimize them. If we find new helmets that can decrease the risk of concussions then less people would be at risk. When it comes to tackle football at grades 3-6 I think that the parents are wanting there kids to get a good understanding of the game. Parents also want there kids to get playing time, therefore the parents just want them back on the field. Another part of the problem is the players want to keep playing so they are not always going to report there symptoms because they do no want taken out.

  7. I think that concussions in sports are something to acknowledge but not such a big deal that you have to blow it out of proportion. Concussions are part of the game but the thing that makes the so severe is the player not telling the trainer his head hurts. The way to minimize them is make sure all the helmets are certified and the coaches should be watching for big hits on their kids. Tackle football shouldn't have an age requirement its part of the sport and you have to learn to get hit and to hit. I know parents always want their kids to stay in the game so they tell them to not tell the trainer if their head hurts.

  8. I think that more people need to become aware of the severity of concussions. I don't think the NFL is blowing things out of proportion, they just want to keep the players safe. I think at first the NFL might've been trying to keep the stats a secret because they didn't want to believe it or make changes to the game. I think there are measures we can take to limit concussions, but not completely resolve them. I think sometimes they are unavoidable. I think tackle football in children under 7th grade shouldn't be encouraged because their brains shouldn't be hit that many times while they're still developing. I think some parents don't realize the long term effects and don't understand the risks of getting another concussion before the first one is completely healed. If parents push their kids to play or if players hide their symptoms they're both making the problem worse. (Jessica)

  9. This is for sure a big deal. Based on what we saw today in class, I realize that second impact syndrome can be fatal, and if it doesn't kill you, it pretty much ruins your life. The sports league is likely keeping the concussion stats secret to make football seem more fun than dangerous. Concussions ARE part of the game, and thats the problem, American football is basically fashioned around devastating blows, which often means concussions. We should at least try to limit the concussions, but it is very difficult to do so in football. Professional football is kind of like the Colosseum in Roman times, the crowd is having fun and being entertained, but the field is actually suffering, even if they don't know they are. In my opinion, kids should start football if they want to in the 7th grade cause before that football isn't very entertaining, and it could lead to issues down the road as their brains are growing a lot at early ages.

  10. I think that concussions are a big deal in sports because like they said in the video, if you have a concussion and don't know it and then receive another one before the first one heals then you can have long term brain damage called second impact syndrome. I'm not sure if I think that the sports league are trying to keep the stats a secret, I wouldn't think so though because it shows that the sport is tough. Concussions are kind of part of the game, your going into it knowing that you'll be hit constantly because that's what football is so we should try to find way to minimize them. Tackle football isn't the best decision for grades 3-6 because of how young they are and how their brains are still developing. I believe that parents and athletes that want to keep playing are part of the problem because parents won't believe that it happened to their kid and the athlete won't want to believe that they got one because they want to keep playing.

  11. I think that concussions are a big deal in sports and that we should pay close attention to them. I think it is actually being blown out of proportion at the college and NFL levels with all of the rules that are being put into place. Concussions are part of the game but they should try to be minimized. Tackle football in youth football should be done away with, instead try to develop kids motor skills with flag football and camps instead of full contact. Parents are part of the problem because often they do not see the full story and just want their kid to go out and play, instead of healing. Kids that want to stay in the game are a problem, they often care more about football than they do about their own health, and they do not see the consequences that will happen such as CTE and Second Impact Syndrome

  12. I think football players and coaches need to take concussions more seriously. I don't think players realize the long term effects that their concussions can have. A lot of players are more worried about the short term effects, like if they are going to get back in the game or not. I think that if players were better educated about the long term effects of concussions, like second impact syndrome and CTE, they would be more concerned about telling their coaches their concussion symptoms.
However, I think that the targeting rule is being blown out of proportion at the college and NFL level. Football is a very fast-moving game, and sometimes hitting other players in the head or neck is unintentional or unavoidable. It is hard for defensive players to immediately stop what they are doing and readjust so that they don't hit another player in the head.
I don't think parents are part of the problem, because I think that if most parents knew their kids had concussion symptoms they would want to take them out of the game. I think that most parents would be more concerned with their kids' safety than if they are going to get back in the game or not. I think that the players are more of a problem, because they are the ones that know if they have concussion symptoms.

  13. I think concussions in sports should be taken very seriously. As we have learned there are many effects concussions can have on players, such as headaches memory loss and sometimes permanent brain damage. As shown in the video many of the players don’t want to report these concussions because they don’t want to lose playing time. I feel like depending on the teams there are many different ways coaches approach concussions based on the player that would be going out. We should be doing ongoing research all the time to find ways to help minimize concussions. And I do believe that 3-4th graders are too young because of the way there brain isn’t even close to be developed and they haven’t gotten the proper training to know which ways are right and wrong.

  14. I think it is important to be aware and to try to prevent concussions in sports. It is a big deal because it can damage brains significantly, especially for student athletes. I feel that sports leagues used to try and keep the stats a secret, but now they understand the importance of preventing head injuries so they would like to make the information more known. Concussions are part of the game but, there are ways of preventing them, such as using updated helmets or simply not having your head down while tackling. The best way to minimize them is to just use better helmets and also ensure that there is an athletic trainer on staff for both games and nearby for practices. Tackle football for grades 3-6 is a dumb idea. Their brains aren't even close to being fully developed, so to have those kind of blows to the head at such a young age is not really worth the risk. Both parents and athletes that want to keep playing after a head injury are part of the problem. Many parents do not understand the severity of those head injuries and would rather have their kid play in a game. Since the parents want them to, many of the kids feel pressure from their parents and also their teammates so they would like to keep playing.

  15. I think concussions are very serious especially when It comes to sports. As a young adult our brains are not fully developed and the repeated head trauma can change and even slow down our brain development. With concussions and second impact syndrome I think that there needs to be repeated awareness on what it can do to an individual if they do not take the time to let the concussions heal, or report their symptoms to their coaches or athletic trainer. Yes I believe concussions are apart of the game, however, we can decrease the amount that happen per year and possibly change the game. We can do this by better helmets don't do head-to head contact, keep the head up, and better neck strength. Tackling football for grades 3-6 should not be allowed you are starting them off way to young to have that big of head trauma and that can affect them even more so as they age. I also believe that the athletes and parents are part of the problem. They both want to keep playing the game, they want to be the star. But is it worth changing the rest of your life just to keep playing for another 5 minutes.

  16. I think that concussions can happen in almost every sport. You should try and prevent concussions as much as possible, but you can't prevent concussions every time. I think it is a big deal because concussions are causing CTE, which can lead to the players acting uncharacteristically and maybe harm themselves. I think they are because the stats could make parents not want their kids to play football. Then there would be no NFL. They are just a part of the game, most of the times the hits are accidental. Yes, we should be trying to minimize them in any way possible. I think they should play flag football at grades 3-6.Parents can be the problem, because some of them don't want their kids sitting out and losing their playing time. No, they are making a living off playing the sport.

  17. I think concussions should be taken very seriously. I think in terms of being blown out of proportion, all the precautions being taken in high school level sports and lower are necessary. As for college football and the NFL, they may be going a little too far. Sometimes you can't help things that happen if you're trying to defend someone, and with the number of trainers and all of the resources the higher level leagues have, the players, as long as they are treated properly, should be fine. The sports leagues are definitely trying to keep these studies a secret because they're all about money and if less people want to play, then they make less money. The same thing goes for people already playing the sport. If they quit after hearing this research, they will lose money also. Concussions are a part of the game, but they should definitely be taken seriously. We for sure should be trying to find ways to minimize concussions, but there is a very slim chance of actually eliminating them for good. I think kids in grades 3-6 shouldn't be allowed to play football because of the increased risk of concussions in underdeveloped brains. Parents of competitive nature are a part of the problem. If the parents don't know the extent of the damage done by a concussion and just want their kid to get back to playing because "he/she's fine", then their child could potentially suffer from severe injuries or possibly even death. Athletes that want to keep playing are somewhat similar to that as well. If the player is competitive and doesn't know how bad their injury is or could get and all they care about is getting back in, then they could suffer tremendously in the near future.

  18. I think concussions are a huge deal in sports because this injury could determine the rest of your life depending on what actions you take to recover. Concussions shouldn't be looked over, they should be looked upon and researched on to try and resolve the issues that create concussions. Many athletes are competitive, you get hit and you jump back up and continue playing. That might not always be the case because you could have a concussion and more than half these athletes go out and keep playing, damaging their brains more and more to the point where a second impact syndrome occurs. The reason most athletes go back out and play the rest of the game is the parents, some student athletes feel like they're letting down their parents and go back out to make them proud. But when something fatal happens all you're giving them is sadness. Finding ways to minimize concussions would be a big help of improving the way sports are played and the way athletes play. Concussions are a big deal in every sport and should be watched closely.

  19. Concussion are a big thing in sports and can lead to permanent damage. I do believe it is a big deal because during sporting events blows to the head happen all the time and should be taking care of right away. I guarantee they keep these stats secret I've never heard anything about them but most people don't ask either. I do believe concussions come with the game everyone who signs up to play knows the risk of them and possible damage. I believe we already are finding ways to minimize them. I don't know I don't think it's a bad thing as long as coaches don't over use certain players. Some parents are a problem cause they want their kids to be the best. Athletes that want to play are a big part of the problem and I will admit I am one of those kids I have never admitted to anyone even when I know I have a concussion -Cody Clark

  20. I think concussions should be taken seriously in sports, especially with younger athletes still in school. It doesn't seem to be blown out of proportion to me as a concussion can lead to CTE or second impact syndrome. I assume sports leagues are trying to keep data away from the public's eye so as to not bring a lot of attention to it. We should encourage athletes to practice proper form, and encourage more funding for sports teams to help them get better equipment. Some parents are not helping by wanting to push their kids because they don't think a concussion is a big deal. Maybe a presentation of the effects of a concussion would do well to drive home to point to both student athletes as well as parents. I personally wouldn't want people in the lower grades (3-5) playing tackle football, because they could seriously damage their young and still developing brain.

  21. I think concussions in sports are not being blown out of proportion and they are a big deal. I think the sports league are trying to the stats a secret. Getting hit and having your life completely ruined should not be apart of the game. We should be finding ways to minimize the. In hockey there's no hitting allowed until high school, football do something like flag football for grades 3-6. Parents are apart of the problem yelling things like let the kid play or that wasn't that bad when a kid gets hit. I don't think athletes that want to keep playing are the problem.
