5. What do you think about concussions and sports?  Is this a big deal or being blown out of proportion?  Are the sports league trying to keep the stats a secret?  Are concussions just part of the game?  Should we be trying to find a way to minimize them? What about tackle football at grades 3-6?  Are parents part of the problem? Are athletes that want to keep playing part of the problem?

  1. I think that concussions in sports are a problem and finding a way to minimize them is something that needs done but I don't think you can just stop them all together. Looking at some sports such as football you can't control what the players do and how hard they hit. Any sport that includes contact is inherently going to have players with concussions. For younger grades they just need to be more careful and take care of the kids that are playing and make sure each of them know how to properly play the game. And athletes that want to keep playing the game are clearly the problem because they’re the ones going out there and getting concussions but they’re just doing what they love and they know the consequences if they are not careful.

  2. Concussions in sports are a danger that lies in most contact and even some non-contact sports. Whether it is multiple blows to the head, or one freak incident, there can be opportunities for dangerous hits to the head. It is a very big and serious matter as well. Brain damage is something that you never want to sustain, and when the damage is not properly diagnosed it can become fatal. Right now concussions have always been seen as "part of the game," but it does not have to be like that forever. With advancements in helmets and protective gear, it should not be a main concern forever. As for tackle football at younger ages, there are safer alternatives than tackle football that still allow the kids to learn the game and have fun doing it. Flag football has recently become very prominent in the youth football community. Finally, of course athletes are going to want to stay on the field and play the game they love. But, sometimes it's too dangerous to push through an injury. That why trainers and medical staff are so important when evaluating injuries.

  3. I think concussions are just part of playing sports and is being blown out of proportion, but I also think they are a big deal. Playing sports always comes with a risk of injury and it is your responsibility and your coaches to ensure you the safest playing. If you get a concussion multiple times in a sport then maybe that sport isn't for you, but most sports have similar risks of concussion. The sports league may be keeping the stats a secret to help them not got flamed for the dangers and to continue the same sport and same rules, but even now more sports are already starting to get baby'd down. We already are tying to find ways to minimize concussion risks and we do that by designing new and more safer helmets and other equipment.I think tackle football during grades 3-6 is still too young and the brain is still really developing. A concussion can be horrible to a child's brain which is why they should stick to flag football, which is way less of a chance to get a concussion. Parents are part of the problem because some don't give there kids a break, but athletes also don't want breaks sometimes too.

  4. Concussions are very common in sports and often go unreported. I believe addressing the concussion issue in sports is important and more athletes need to be informed about the long term affects. I do not think the sports league is trying to keep the stats a secret; however, I do think that they know many concussions go unreported and they do nothing about it. Concussions may just be apart of high contact sports, but people should be doing a better job on the treatment. Getting a concussion is not so much the problem, but how they are being treated and the long term affects on the athlete. Players want to get back into the game as soon as possible, so more often than not they will convince the trainers or coaches that they are fine to get playing time. They rush the treatment. We should be educating parents and their children what can happen to players that choose to do nothing about their concussions. I believe it would not only make them more liable, but be an eye opener. Tackle football for children ages 3-6 can be very dangerous. The brain is developing heavily at this point in a child's life and one blow to the head could change their life forever. The structure of their brain could change and alter how they learn, communicate, and handle their emotions. Parents are apart of the problem as well. They want to see their kid out on the field playing and often don't take into consideration the long term affects these sports could be having on young children. Players not only need to address the issue, but take better care of themselves. Also, if they think one of their friends may be suffering from a concussion, they should get them help.

  6. I think that concussions have always been apart of the game since the start of time and that they can be very, very dangerous. I think that we have made major advancements in technologies that will help with concussions. With sports it can be very hard sometimes just to avoid a concussion which makes it even more dangerous. The more you get hit in the head the chances you'll permanently damage your brain is higher. Majority of these athletes do not like admitting to having a concussion simply because they do not want to be sitting for their game which in result over time could be even fatal. I do believe that they try to keep the stats a secret because if they knew in depth how many concussions there were and what they do exactly, they would not have the appeal they have now. I also believe that grades 3-6 should not be playing tackle. Tackle is too dangerous for them and it can alter their minds at such a young age that it would be impossible for it to heal. In conclusion, there's no way anyone can stop concussions but they can have the right material to treat if one were to happen. With the right medical staff it can help tremendously

  7. I think concussions are a serious problem in the sports world, plaguing many. To me, its becoming a big deal due to the fact of cases in highschool being more than double that of college, and the brain is still developing in highschool stages. Sports league were trying to keep it a secret, though with steps taken in the modern day, they cannot now. Concussions may seem like just part of the game, steps can be taken to lower or avoid the chances of receiving one, and if one does get a concussion, they should be pulled from the game immediately. Tackle football at younger grades should be officiated with a sharp eye, with precautions made so little kids cannot have chances to recieve serious injuries. Parents are not part of the problem, as normal ones want what’s best for their kids, though athletes that want to keep playing are part of the problem. They need to recognize the dangers that come with concussions.
